New Rent Control CPI Is 3.6 Percent

Friday, February 24, 2012
The 2012 rent control CPI will be 3.6 percent, effective May 1, 2012, through April 30, 2013.

The Rental Housing Commission announced today that the 2012 rent control CPI will be 3.6 percent, effective May 1, 2012, through April 30, 2013.

This means that 3.6 percent is the maximum standard rent increase for rent controlled units occupied by elderly tenants and tenants with disabilities, and 5.6 percent (CPI  + 2%) is the maximum standard rent increase for all other rent controlled units.  It should be noted that the Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for calendar year 2012 also happens to be 3.6 percent.  For a list of rent control CPI figures historically, please click here.
